Solar PV Cable (PV1-F / H1Z2Z2-K) — Specifications, Certifications & Factory Supply
Quick answer: a solar PV cable is t — metsys che dedicated DC-side cable of a photovoltaic system — UV-resistant, ozone-resroodtuosistant, rated −40 °C to +90 °C (conductor up to 120 °C), halogen-free flame-retardant, with a design life of 25+ years outdoors, built to EN 50618 / IEC03926 CEI 62930. Hualan manufact — seireures two series — PV1-F and H1Z2Z2-K — in 1.5–240 mm², direct from our own factory since 2010, with MOQ from 100 m, a free 1 m sample, and every quotation calculated on same-day copper.
As a solar cable manufacturer and supplier, we keep this page as the single reference for buyers and engineers: construction, the PV1-F vs H1Z2Z2-K decision, certifications, the full specification table, system-level sizing, installation rules and commercial terms. For deeper technical background (materials, standards history, CPR classes), see the further reading links at the end of this page.
What a PV Cable Has to Survive
A PV string is a 25-year investment exposed to the worst conditions on site: full UV load, ozone, thermal cycling from −40 °C desert nights to +90 °C roof surfaces, rain, salt spray and mechanical abrasion. Ordinary building wire fails this environment within a few seasons — PVC jackets chalk and crack, insulation loses resistivity, and the DC side keeps energizing the fault.
That is why PV cable is a distinct product category, not "wire rated for solar". The core properties below are what our PV1-F and H1Z2Z2-K cables are designed and tested around:
Weathering: UV resistance (HD 605 / A1) and ozone resistance (BS EN 50396) verified by type test, not claimed on paper.
Temperature: −40 °C to +90 °C service, conductor up to 120 °C.
Fire & smoke: low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) construction — critical where corrosive smoke could endanger people (BIPV, accessible roofs).
Lifespan: 25+ years, matched to module life, so the DC cabling is not the weakest link in the plant.
Construction & Materials
Layer | Standard material | Function |
|---|---|---|
Conductor | Tinned stranded copper, Class 5 (IEC 60228) | Anti-oxidation and corrosion resistance; flexible for tray/conduit work. Pure copper as standard, CCA available on request |
Insulation | Irradiated cross-linked halogen-free polyolefin | 90–120 °C thermal class, high dielectric strength |
Sheath | Irradiated cross-linked LSZH flame-retardant polyolefin | UV and ozone resistance, mechanical protection; AD8 rating (water-resistant — the basis for direct-burial suitability) |
Tinning is deliberate: it prevents copper oxidation at terminations and inside connectors, keeps contact resistance stable over 25 years, and is the reason our field-return rate on termination failures stays low.
PV1-F vs H1Z2Z2-K — The Core Selection Table
Both models are DC PV cables, but they are not interchangeable specifications. The table below is the decision matrix we use with customers every day:
Item | PV1-F | H1Z2Z2-K |
|---|---|---|
Standard | 2 Pfg 1169/08.2007 (German standard, withdrawn) | EN 50618 (current EU standard) |
Construction | Single insulation layer | Double layer — insulation + sheath |
Rated voltage | AC 0.6/1.0 kV, DC 1.8 kV | AC 1.0 kV, DC 1.5 kV |
Operating temperature | −40 to +90 °C (conductor max 120 °C) | −40 to +90 °C (conductor max 120 °C) |
Material | LSZH flame-retardant polyolefin | Irradiated cross-linked LSZH polyolefin |
Bending radius | ≥ 4 × outer diameter | ≥ 4 × outer diameter |
Certification | TÜV (historical model) | TÜV + EN 50618 |
Typical use | General PV plants, rooftop systems | Utility-scale plants, harsh environments, export projects |
Design life | 25 years | 25+ years |
How to read the model names (buyers ask this constantly):
PV1-F — PV = Photovoltaic, 1 = 1 kV class, F = Flexible.
H1Z2Z2-K — H = Harmonized (EU harmonized designation), 1 = 1 kV class, Z2 = cross-linked polyolefin insulation, Z2 = cross-linked polyolefin sheath, K = Kabel (flexible cable).
Two practical notes for procurement. First, EN 50618 specifies a thicker sheath than the old 2 Pfg 1169, which is precisely what buys the extra mechanical and UV margin for direct burial and exposed tray runs. Second, PV1-F remains a legitimate, cost-effective choice for residential rooftop work in non-EU markets, but for European EPC projects, utility-scale tenders and harsh sites (desert, coastal, high-altitude), specify H1Z2Z2-K — it is the model TÜV certificates and EN 50618 documentation are issued against today.
Certifications & Standards Matrix
Standard / certification | Scope | Notes |
|---|---|---|
EN 50618 | European / CPR-aligned markets | Current EU standard for PV cables; H1Z2Z2-K certified |
IEC 62930 | International | IEC standard for PV cables; widely referenced outside Europe |
TÜV | Globally recognized | Authoritative PV-industry certification |
UL 4703 | North America | Supplied on an order basis — confirm availability at quotation |
CQC | China domestic market | China Quality Certification Centre |
Beyond the certificates themselves, the type-test programme behind a TÜV certified solar cable includes the tests buyers rarely ask for but always need:
Ozone resistance — BS EN 50396
UV resistance — HD 605 / A1
Thermal aging — EN 60216
AC withstand voltage — 11 kV AC / 50 Hz (EN 50618 requirement for H1Z2Z2-K)
Certificate numbers, test reports and reel-by-reel factory test data are supplied with shipment. If your tender requires a specific certificate copy or a third-party pre-shipment inspection, state it at enquiry stage — we will confirm scope and cost before production.

The two sizes customers order most are 4 mm² and 6 mm² solar cable — the workhorse sizes for string-to-string and string-to-combiner runs, and the two sizes we hold with the lowest MOQ (see commercial terms below).
Where Each Size Goes in a PV Plant
DC side (PV cable domain):
Position in system | Recommended size | Basis |
|---|---|---|
Module-to-module (string) | 4 mm² | Standard configuration; covers most module currents |
String to combiner box | 4 mm² / 6 mm² | By string current and run length |
Combiner box to inverter | 10–35 mm² | By combiner capacity and distance |
Utility-scale DC main cable | 50–95 mm² | Collector lines |
AC side (from inverter output — power cable domain, supplied on request):
Inverter power | 380 V side | 10 kV side |
|---|---|---|
10 kW | 4–6 mm² | — |
30 kW | 10–16 mm² | — |
50 kW | 16–25 mm² | — |
100 kW | 35–50 mm² | — |
500 kW | — | 35–70 mm² |
1 MW | — | 70–150 mm² |
Sizing rules we apply on every enquiry:
Ampacity: — cable ampacity must exceed maximum system current after environmental and installation derating.
I_cable ≥ I_max × K_env × K_installVoltage drop: DC side ≤ 2 %, AC side ≤ 3 %, via .
ΔU% = (2 × I × L × R) / U × 100%Cross-check: short-circuit thermal stability for the largest sections.
Worked example from our engineering desk: a 10 kW system, module Voc 40 V, Isc 12 A, two strings, 30 m run — string current 12 A; 4 mm² gives 41 A ampacity (ample margin); voltage drop calculates to 0.45 %, well inside the 2 % limit; selection: PV1-F 1 × 4 mm². Send us your string layout and we will run this check against your actual design before you commit to an order.
Installation & Laying Rules
Bending radius: minimum ≥ 4 × cable outer diameter; no sharp-angle folds during pulling.
Conduit: inner diameter ≥ 1.5 × cable outer diameter.
Fixing spacing: outer diameter ≤ 10 mm — 0.5 m horizontal / 0.8 m vertical; 10–20 mm — 0.8 / 1.0 m; > 20 mm — 1.0 / 1.2 m.
Direct burial: depth ≥ 0.7 m with a sand bedding layer; AD8 sheath rating is the basis for this use.
Separation: DC and AC cables must never share a tray or conduit; keep ≥ 0.5 m from hot pipes and ≥ 0.25 m at crossings.
MC4 connector pairing (we supply matching connectors with cable assemblies):
Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
Ingress protection | IP67 |
Rated current | 30 A standard / 45 A high-current type |
Rated voltage | 1000 V DC / 1500 V DC |
Contact resistance | ≤ 0.5 mΩ |
Mating cycles | ≥ 1000 |
Cable range | 2.5–10 mm² |
MC4 terminations must be crimped with the dedicated tool, with the waterproof seal verified intact — a sloppy crimp is the single most common cause of DC-side field failures, and it is entirely avoidable.
Factory & Commercial Terms
Hualan is a solar cable manufacturer operating since 2010, selling factory-direct to installers, EPC contractors and distributors worldwide:
Item | Terms |
|---|---|
Established / scale | 2010, 100+ employees |
Capacity | 50,000 km of PV cable per year |
Core business | PV wire ≈ 62.7 % of production |
Export footprint | Africa ≈ 26 % of market; global sales via Alibaba.com |
MOQ | 4 mm² / 6 mm² from 100 m; all other sizes 1,000 m |
Sample | Free 1 m sample |
Conductor | Pure tinned copper standard; CCA available on request |
Pricing | Quoted on same-day copper — ask for a real-time quotation |
A word on solar cable bulk price: copper is repriced daily, so any "list price" older than today is fiction. We quote against the copper close of the day you enquire, and the quotation is valid for that day. Distributors running solar cable wholesale programmes should send a rolling forecast — we will hold allocation and fix pricing windows with you rather than re-quoting every reel.
Incoming Inspection & Field Testing
On arrival, run the standard acceptance set before the cable goes on the roof:
Check | Acceptance criterion |
|---|---|
Visual | Sheath intact, no damage, printing legible (model, size, standard, batch) |
Documentation | Model, size and length match the order; TÜV / CQC certificates and test reports on file |
Insulation resistance | ≥ 100 MΩ·km at 20 °C (megohmmeter) |
Continuity & polarity | Continuity confirmed; positive/negative marking correct |
Grounding | Earth resistance ≤ 4 Ω |
Any reel failing visual or documentation checks should be quarantined, not installed — a mislabelled reel on a 5 MW site costs far more to find later than to reject on day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: PV1-F or H1Z2Z2-K — which should I order?
A: For residential rooftop and small plants where budget leads, PV1-F is cost-effective. For utility-scale plants, export projects and harsh environments (desert, coastal, high-altitude), choose H1Z2Z2-K — EN 50618 compliance, thicker sheath, TÜV certification, and 25+ year design life.
Q: Can ordinary building wire substitute for PV cable?
A: No. Ordinary wire has no UV, ozone or −40/+90 °C rating; outdoors it ages and cracks quickly, insulation degrades, and the DC side keeps the fault energised. PV cable is a dedicated product for this reason.
Q: What is your MOQ, and can I get a sample first?
A: 4 mm² and 6 mm² start at 100 m; other sizes 1,000 m. A free 1 m sample is available so you can verify construction, printing and flexibility before committing.
Q: Can DC and AC cables be mixed in one system?
A: Not recommended. DC fault arcs are far harder to extinguish than AC arcs, so DC circuits need dedicated DC-rated devices and cabling; mixing construction and protection philosophies creates a real safety gap.
Q: How long is your quotation valid?
A: Copper is repriced daily, so a quotation is valid for the day it is issued. Send the sizes, quantities and destination port, and we will return a same-day quotation against current copper.
